Emotional Intelligence and Wellness
Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify, understand and manage emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathise with others, overcome challenges and defuse conflict. This ability also allows us to recognise and understand ourselves as well as what others are experiencing emotionally. This recognition and understanding is, for the most part, a nonverbal process that informs thinking and influences how well you connect with others. This in turn enhances our own well-being and the well-being of others.
Emotional intelligence differs from how we think of intellectual ability, in that emotional intelligence is learned—not acquired. This learning can take place at any time in life so the social and emotional skill set, known as emotional intelligence, is something we can all develop.
The five main EI skills are Self Awareness, Self- Control, Self - Inspiration, Compassion, Trust.
The benefits of emotional intelligence include improved health and well being in the following areas:
Physical Health - awareness and control of our emotions helps us feel like we have more energy and helps the body cope better physically.
Emotional Health - learning to manage emotions and letting go will improve our overall emotional wellbeing.
Mental Health - when we have strategies and techniques that can assist us in difficult or challenging times we have opportunities to deal with mental stress and conditions with ease.
Spiritual Health - linking our emotions to a higher form of energy can open up our spiritual connections to self and others.
Workplace and Study Health - the use of Ei can make us better work colleagues, leaders, students and teachers which makes our environment happy and content.
